Youth Volunteer of the Year: Shane Sheets
At age 20, Shane Sheets of Green Isle, Minn., has already volunteered more than some people do in a lifetime.
He began serving as a Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) volunteer with his mother when he was 10 years old. By age 12 he was trained to serve food and drink to disaster survivors, and later used this experience to serve Hurricane Katrina survivors.
Between work, college, student government and being a volunteer EMT, his few days off are spent with his fiancé and two cats visiting nursing home residents through The Salvation Army Community Cares Ministry.
During Christmastime, Sheets bell rings and serves community meals.
Sheets “has an uplifting personality and a passion for helping people,” said nominator Joanne Johnson Lee, Northern Division Service Extension Director. “All this and he is only 20 years old. We can only imagine his future volunteer experiences with The Salvation Army.”
