Bell Ringer Volunteers Because of Salvation Army Gift in 1948
When The Salvation Army knocked at the backdoor of the Nelson home in 1948, 5-year-old Ed Nelson was confused as to why the “Army” was at his house.
His family was preparing for Christmas in their Springfield, Minn., home when two volunteers delivered a special gift to Nelson and his two siblings: brand new pairs of little brown shoes. (read more)
Salvation Army Employee Wins Prestigious Community Service Award
When The Salvation Army’s Marci Godfrey heard she won a 2007 award from Mpls./St. Paul Magazine for outstanding community service, she didn’t know what hit her.“I was a bit confused and quite surprised when I was listening to my (phone) messages – a representative at the magazine was congratulating me for winning,” said Godfrey, a social security outreach specialist who helps the homeless in Minneapolis. The Varsity Theater in Dinky Town was a flashy, flourishing fashion show Nov. 13 when 16 University of Minnesota students worked the catwalk to the tune of live music. Although Gucci and Prada representatives were nowhere to be seen, concert-goers and local fashion enthusiasts looking to donate to The Salvation Army more than made up for the absence of couture designers.
