Twin Star Justin Morneau Donates Turkeys for Homeless Vets
Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau paid a visit to The Salvation Army Harbor Light Shelter in downtown Minneapolis Nov. 24 to give a group of veterans all they needed for a wonderful Thanksgiving.
The 2006 American League MVP spent the evening posing for pictures, signing autographs and handing out baskets filled with a cornucopia of goodies: turkey, fixings and pumpkin pie. (View photos.)
Morneau said he is proud to support veterans.
“I’m out there playing baseball, they’re out there risking their lives,” he said.
After the veterans left with their Thanksgiving feasts, Harbor Light administrator Envoy Bill Miller told Morneau how much his visit meant.
“For these people, your visit was bigger than hitting a home run or winning the MVP – you could see it in their eyes,” Miller said.
Harbor Light provides transitional housing for 10 homeless veterans. Early next year, 10 more housing units will be added at a south Minneapolis home the shelter recently purchased.
Harbor Light feeds and shelters hundreds of homeless people every night. It is the largest homeless outreach facility in Minnesota.
