The Salvation Army Begins Long-Term Relief for Hugo Tornado Survivors
The Salvation Army has shifted its focus from meeting the immediate needs of Hugo’s tornado survivors to assisting them long-term.
About 60 homes suffered major damage or complete destruction in the May 25 twister, leaving dozens of individuals and families homeless. The Salvation Army is coordinating up to six months of housing assistance for these people.
The Salvation Army is also helping these and other affected residents with unmet financial needs associated with insurance claims or having to take time off work. It is estimated that about 100 households will need some form of financial assistance.
"The Salvation Army will continue to serve our friends in Hugo for as long as our resources allow,” said Drew Hasty, Twin Cities disaster recovery director for The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army has so far raised $33,600 for tornado survivors, including $10,000 gifts from Target Corp. and 3M Co.
The Salvation Army began serving tornado survivors and relief workers the day of the disaster. As of June 2, 44 volunteers and 16 staff have given 1,106 hours of service, from distributing thousands of snack packs and drink bottles to serving nearly 3,400 meals. Check out photos from that day.
“We are so very thankful for the hard work that our staff and volunteers have put into helping Hugo residents rebuild their lives,” Hasty said.
