2008 Stand Down event

The Salvation Army Helping Homeless Veterans May 19-20

The Salvation Army will be on hand to serve homeless veterans May 19-20 during the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans’ annual “Stand Down” event at Fort Snelling in St. Paul.

Stand Downs are held across the U.S. throughout the year to bring homeless veterans together in a single location and offer them the resources they need to rebuild their lives.

Hundreds of veterans will be at Ft. Snelling to receive food, clothing, health screenings, dental exams, housing applications, legal advice, haircuts and other services from dozens of businesses, nonprofits and government agencies.

The Salvation Army will offer meals, drinks, Bibles, referral services and more.

Envoy Donna Doft of the Twin Cities Salvation Army (pictured at the 2008 Stand Down) has served at many Stand Downs.

“A couple of years ago I met a veteran who had been homeless for 10 years before one of our social services staff members helped him find housing,” she said.

On May 20, Stand Down participants will enjoy hot breakfast sandwiches prepared by staff and volunteers of The Salvation Army Harbor Light Shelter in downtown Minneapolis.
