Inner-City Youth Raise Money for Charity by Drawing
The West 7th Salvation Army in St. Paul was among 20 U.S. sites that received a free drawing lesson Sept. 12 from Young Rembrandts, a national program that teaches art to children.
The theme of the day was stagecoaches. About a dozen children drew and then colored their pictures of the old-time wagons.
Young Rembrandts will post the artwork on www.drawingsacrossamerica.org, a soon-to-be-live website that will allow kids from across the country to show their art to the world and raise money for charity.
For every original drawing uploaded to the website, Young Rembrandts makes a $1 donation to Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts.
“We’re thrilled to see (The Salvation Army) recognize the importance and the impact of art,” said Bette Fetter, founder and CEO of Young Rembrandts.
Young Rembrandts offered the training as part of its 20th anniversary.
The W. 7th Salvation Army offers inner-city children a host of educational opportunities, including art, music and on-site tutoring. These programs are offered through day care and after-school programs.
