The Salvation Army Spends $90k on Christmas
Assistance for Flood Survivors

January 11, 2008 –Throughout Christmas, The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) continued its long-term commitment to survivors of the August floods in southeastern Minnesota. Even more assistance is on the way, though it will end soon.

The Salvation Army distributed more than $90,000 in gift cards for gas, food, clothing and Christmas gifts. The cards were given to hundreds of survivors through Salvation Army offices in six counties: Fillmore, Houston, Winona, Olmstead, Dodge and Steel. Each person received $100 in gift cards, with a family maximum of $600.

“Many survivors started crying when they received their gift cards,” said Lee Morrison, EDS incident commander. “We knew it would be difficult for many flood survivors to cope with the extra expenses Christmas brings. We are thrilled we could assist them.”

The assistance has helped keep a Rushford man warm and dry this winter. In December the man entered a Salvation Army office in Rushford wearing tattered boots with soles he had glued on. He explained that because he had “fixed” his boots, all he needed was a coat to get him through the season.

“We gave him the gift cards he needed not only to buy a coat, but to get new boots as well,” Morrison said.

The Salvation Army’s next two major relief projects include supplying households with appliances such as washers, dryers and stoves, and helping families get their plumbing and electrical systems in working order.

Unfortunately, the assistance won’t last forever. Salvation Army flood offices will close this spring. To find one near you, call 1-800-457-7104.

Flood survivors with FEMA numbers are strongly encouraged to contact The Salvation Army. Much assistance is still available.

The Salvation Army serves in more than 100 countries and provides both immediate emergency assistance and long-term recovery help in the event of any disaster.
