Elementary School Students in New Brighton Holding
Fund-Raising Competition for Haiti Relief

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – January 25, 2010 – Sunnyside Elementary School in New Brighton will soon hold a four-day fund-raising competition – boys vs. girls – to raise money for The Salvation Army’s disaster relief efforts in Haiti.

The competition will be held Jan. 25–28, when students can donate to any of four Salvation Army kettles set up at the school – two kettles for boys, two for girls.

The idea to focus the fund-raiser on Haiti disaster relief came from one of the students. The school has a history of raising money for charities that deliver aid to poor countries.

“We thank the students and faculty of Sunnyside Elementary for their support,” said Major Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation. “One hundred percent of the money they raise will help The Salvation Army provide food, water and medical attention to the people of Haiti.”

Hundreds of Salvation Army officers and staff are in Haiti providing assistance to tens of thousands of earthquake survivors. Today The Salvation Army shipped 80,000 pounds of emergency food and water to the country, with more on the way.
