Twin Cities Salvation Army
Celebrating 125 Years on 1/25
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – January 25, 2011 – The Twin Cities Salvation Army will kick off its 125th anniversary celebration Jan. 25 by distributing 125 boxes of cookies to local businesses, police and fire stations, churches and other local organizations that support The Salvation Army.
Throughout 2011, the Twin Cities Salvation Army will hold 125 different events that demonstrate the organization’s commitment to feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, empowering youth and freeing people from addiction.
“After 125 years of serving millions, our many generations of supporters have shown that helping others never goes out of style,” said Major Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “We thank the Twin Cities community for 125 years of giving, volunteering and helping us care for people in need.”
The Salvation Army began operating in the Twin Cities in 1886. The first center of operation opened in Minneapolis and has since moved to Brooklyn Park. The next two opened a year later in 1887 and have remained ever since: the West 7th Salvation Army in St. Paul and the Lake Street Salvation Army in Minneapolis.
The Salvation Army was founded in London, England by William Booth in 1865 and now has centers in more than 120 countries.
The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people a year through its 25 local centers of operation. Daily it serves 2,000 hot meals and shelters 850 people. More than 14,000 local volunteers help The Salvation Army provide a multitude of services, from child daycare to senior housing.
