The Salvation Army Flood Recovery Steps Up with Construction and Appliance Assistance
Registration ends March 31, 2008
February 13, 2008 – The Salvation Army has stepped up its recovery efforts this month providing financial help for new appliances, plumbing and electrical work in damaged homes for scores of southeastern Minnesota residents affected by the August floods.
The primary focus is getting people back into their homes and back to a self-reliant position.
“We have hundreds of families on our case list and one of the biggest needs at this point is financial assistance for construction and appliances,” said Major Daniel Sjögren, Commander of The Salvation Army Northern Division. “Many people have received help from insurance and FEMA but still have unmet needs and just as many did not qualify for help, so there is much work still to be done.”
The Salvation Army raised $1 million for the relief and recovery efforts. To date the agency has spent $588,000. It expects to spend the remainder of its funds on this drive to get families back into their homes.
“If there are people out there who still have needs, we encourage them to call our offices,” Sjögren said. “We have had flood relief offices open since August and have worked fervently to get the message out that we want to help.”
The Salvation Army is taking new cases up until March 31. Anyone experiencing financial stress directly related to losses from the August floods must make an appointment for evaluation at one of four regional offices covering Fillmore, Houston, Winona, Olmstead, Dodge and Steel counties. Residents may call 800-457-7104 or click here to locate the appropriate office to make an appointment.
