The Salvation Army Responds To West Virginia Mine Explosions
On the scene at the worst mining disasters in the past twenty seven years

April 7, 2010 – Montcoal, West Virginia – In the aftermath of one of the worst mining disasters in the past twenty seven years, according to Department of Labor statistics, Beckley Salvation Army officers and volunteers continue to offer emotional and spiritual comfort to the victims families and hydration to fire and rescue personnel. More than six hundred and fifty meals have been served since Monday’s explosion, along with snacks and drinks provided.

Major Tom Richmond, Area Commander, Charleston, WV continues to offer assistance and is currently serving as Liaison for the EOC and Homeland Security.

Many area businesses, including the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce have helped provide assistance to the Beckley Corps officers, Captains Rob and Monica Barber, and their volunteers in the form of food and snacks for distribution. This is truly a community effort and a tragedy that has affected families, co-workers, friends and an entire community, state and country as prayers and condolences come in from all across the USA.
