Comcast Volunteers Painting Salvation Army Facility,
Helping the Elderly on Comcast Cares Day

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – April 28, 2011 –
An army of Comcast employees, their families and friends will descend on The Salvation Army this Saturday, April 30 from 8 a.m.–12 p.m. to help the elderly, paint facilities and refurbish collection bins. Sen. Linda Higgins, DFL-Minneapolis, is scheduled to attend.

Some of the volunteers will head to The Salvation Army in Northeast Minneapolis (2727 Central Ave. NE) to paint its youth library and computer lab. Both rooms are in desperate need of fresh paint.

Others will arrive at the home of elderly Minneapolis resident Cle Gorman to clean the inside and outside of her house. In addition to other medical issues, Gorman needs support because she is going blind. “She is such a beautiful person. This will be a huge blessing to her,” said Salvation Army social worker Cathy Baugh.

Another team will come to The Salvation Army headquarters in Roseville (2445 Prior Ave. N.) to paint and repair barrels used to collect toys and clothes during the Christmas season.

“Comcast is a perfect example of how a group of compassionate individuals and dedicated businesses can transform a community,” said Major Darryl Leedom, Salvation Army Twin Cities Commander. “This is just one example of what Comcast accomplishes with The Salvation Army. Once a month, they serve breakfast at our St. Paul location on West 7th Street. They also use their bill inserts to encourage their customers to volunteer. It’s a great relationship.”

Comcast’s effort is part of Comcast Cares Day, the company’s 10th annual national day of service and one of the largest single-day corporate volunteer efforts in the country. In the Twin Cities, about 1,400 Comcast volunteers will assist 23 local nonprofits; nationally, more than 62,000 volunteers will participate.

The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 214,000 people a year through its 25 local centers of operation. Daily it serves 2,100 hot meals and shelters 900 people. More than 33,000 local volunteers help The Salvation Army provide a multitude of services, from child daycare to senior housing.
