Wake-up Call: Hunger About to Spike
National Salvation Army Week highlights need for
increased food donations during summer months
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – It’s no secret that the poor economy has strained Salvation Army food shelves in the Twin Cities. But the situation is about to get even more difficult.
In just a few short weeks, thousands of children from low-income families will no longer have access to free school breakfast and lunch. This will put more pressure on The Salvation Army’s six metro area food shelves. In the past two years, use of the food shelves has jumped by about 1,550 households after school is out.
“In order to offset the looming increase in need at our food shelves, The Salvation Army needs help from the Twin Cities community,” said Major Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “There is no better time to help than now, during National Salvation Army Week.”
National Salvation Army Week is being celebrated in the Twin Cities and across the country May 10 – 15. Now in its 57th year, President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared the first National Salvation Army Week in 1954.
There are many easy ways to support Salvation Army food shelves during National Salvation Army week:
