The Salvation Army of China Deploys Relief Workers, Counselors to Aid Earthquake Survivors

May 15, 2008 -- Salvation Army relief workers will soon arrive to one of the hardest-hit regions of Monday’s devastating 7.8 earthquake in central China. Salvation Army counselors will be deployed soon after.

On Friday morning the relief workers will begin serving noodles and biscuits to survivors in Mao Xian, Sichuan Province, a region northeast of Wenchuan, the epicenter of the tremor. The team includes workers from Hong Kong and mainland China. They had planned to arrive today, but were forced to reschedule due to strong aftershocks.

The relief workers will also conduct a comprehensive on-site assessment for further emergency relief operations, which will include the deployment of professional Salvation Army social workers from Hong Kong. The volunteer social workers will comfort survivors through counseling and spiritual support.

The relief workers are traveling to Mao Xian by land from Kunming, Sichuan Province, through Liang Shan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.
