The Salvation Army Offering A/C, Water in Downtown Minneapolis Amid Record Heat
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – May 24, 2010 –The Salvation Army Harbor Light Shelter in downtown Minneapolis is offering ice-cold water and a cool place to stay today for anyone who needs it. The National Weather Service has issued a heat warning in the Twin Cities through early tonight, with temperatures expected to reach the lower 90s, a new record.
Anybody is welcome to beat the heat inside Harbor Light’s new chapel, located at 1010 Currie Ave., from 10 a.m. until dusk.
The 6,000-square-foot chapel was built last summer to expand the shelter’s worship services and to provide respite for the homeless during extreme weather.
“This is the first day of 2010 that we have opened our chapel to help keep people safe from overheating,” said Major Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “We are thankful to have the new chapel. We used it to keep thousands of people warm during the winter. Now it is proving just as useful during the early arrival of summer.”
The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people a year through its 25 local centers of operation. Daily it serves 2,000 hot meals and shelters 850 people. More than 14,000 local volunteers help The Salvation Army provide a multitude of services, from child daycare to senior housing.
