The Salvation Army Serves in Aftermath of Hugo Tornado
Meals served to emergency staff, volunteers and residents

HUGO, Minn. – May 27, 2008 – Tw0 Salvation Army crews in mobile feeding kitchens (canteens) are patrolling the hardest hit areas of Hugo, Minn., following Sunday’s tornado that killed one person, destroyed 50 homes and damaged nearly 160 others.

Yesterday the crews – which include spiritual care personnel – served 740 meals to emergency workers and residents as they began cleanup efforts. The crews will remain on site today. One canteen will be permanently stationed at 159th and Foxhill until further notice.

The tornado damage is estimated at $25 million.

“While this neighborhood may look like piles of rubble, it is the remnants of lives and respecting that is extremely important to healing,” said Chrissie Morrison, long-term disaster recovery director for The Salvation Army. “This is the place where our trained volunteers and pastors can add a measure of security and calm.”

Morrison expects the need for Salvation Army caseworkers in the near future as families assess the damage and seek financial assistance for emergency needs of food, clothing and shelter, plus insurance-related needs.

“There will likely be families needing our help for weeks or even months to come,” Morrison said. “The Salvation Army will serve as long as our expertise and resources are available.”

The Salvation Army is available to help with unmet financial needs due to this disaster. For help call 1-800-457-7104.
