Salvation Army Receives First Major Tornado Relief Donations
Target gives $10k and supplies, public donates $2,500
HUGO, Minn. – May 27, 2008 – Minnesota residents and Target Corp. have begun donating to The Salvation Army for tornado relief efforts. The Salvation Army has estimated it will need $100,000 to achieve its service goals for the hundreds of Hugo residents who survived Sunday’s F3 twister.
Target today gave $10,000 that The Salvation Army will use for direct financial assistance to survivors. The company also donated 2,000 disaster kits and 2,000 snack bags that The Salvation Army will distribute to the countless volunteers scheduled to arrive Saturday. The disaster kits include essential items for working long hours outdoors: sun screen, lip balm, bug repellent and more. Due to the outpouring of support from volunteers, the City of Hugo now has enough volunteer help to meet its immediate needs.
The public has also been contributing. Since 10 a.m. today, nearly $2,500 has been collected online.
“Today’s donations have been a fantastic start in building a fund to help our friends in Hugo,” said Chrissie Morrison, long-term disaster recovery director for The Salvation Army. “We must continue the momentum. More money will be needed to assist residents with unmet financial needs associated with insurance claims or having to take time off of work to rebuild their homes and lives.”
Target also donated an additional $10,000 to assist in The Salvation Army’s relief efforts in Iowa communities that sustained immense destruction.
