ROSEVILLE, Minn. – June 18, 2009 – The Austin Salvation Army will serve free meals today to residents of Austin and surrounding communties struggling in the aftermath of last night’s tornado that caused damage and left much of the city without electricity. Everyone is welcome.
Meals will be served at the Austin Salvation Army, located at 409 First Ave. NE, at noon and 5 p.m.
The noon meal will be provided by Piggy Blues restaurant. Last night, Savory Skillet restaurant made sandwiches by candlelight for The Salvation Army to distribute all night long to residents cleaning their yards.
“It is wonderful that these local restaurants have joined in our mission to serve,” said Major Marlys Anderson, leader of the Austin Salvation Army. “Their contributions have saved us time and resources that we are using to better serve this community.”
Other restaurants willing to donate resources may call 507-437-4566.
Salvation Army response units from Albert Lea and Mankato have been deployed to help with relief efforts. Currently, two Salvation Army mobile kitchens (canteens) are roving the streets to serve food and hydration to residents and emergency workers; a total of 24 Salvation Army volunteers are working throughout the city. Salvation Army services are desperately needed, as most local retail and grocery stores are without power.
In times of disaster The Salvation Army specializes in providing mass feeding at the time of natural disasters, as well as providing financial resources to survivors as recovery efforts begin.
