PRESS RELEASE
The Salvation Army Offering A/C, Cold Water to the
Homeless in Downtown Minneapolis
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – June 23, 2009 – The Salvation Army Harbor Light Shelter in downtown Minneapolis will offer homeless people ice-cold water and a cool place to stay today as temperatures reach the mid-90s. The National Weather Service has issued a heat warning through early tonight, with temperatures expected to feel like between 100 to 105 degrees because of high humidity.
Anybody is welcome to come inside Harbor Light and its air conditioned chapel, located at 1010 Currie Ave.
“We are expecting lots of people,” said Harbor Light COO Stephen Horsfield. “We offered the same service yesterday and had lots of people show up.”
A new 6,000-square-foot chapel attached to the current one will open Sunday, allowing Harbor Light to accommodate even more people should temperatures spike to dangerous levels later in the summer.
Harbor Light offers the same shelter service in winter when temperatures drop to extreme levels.
The Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people in the Twin Cities and is a safety net for those with no place to turn. It serves 2,100 hot meals a day and houses more than 850 people every night.
