The Salvation Army Begins Financial Assistance
for SE Minnesota Flood Survivors
Target Contributes $10,000 to Efforts
ROSEVILLE, MN – August 23, 2007 – Even with flood waters covering many homes, The Salvation Army is providing immediate financial assistance to help families as they wait for final assessments of damage and hoped for help from the federal government.
“Our concern is for people,” Major Daniel Sjögren, divisional commander for The Salvation Army said. “We need to relieve them of some of the burden they are dealing with as quickly as possible. One way to do that is provide financial assistance for emergency needs.” A flood hotline is established for those seeking assistance in the six county disaster area: 1-800-721-4202.
“Yesterday we received over $7,000 in credit card donations and Target has stepped in with an additional $10,000 donation,” Sjögren said. “That money will be desperately needed in these next days of care.”
The Salvation Army has committed to a minimum of 4 months of recovery efforts in the six counties. A primary goal is to set up service units in each county for easy access to caseworkers and for supplies for clean up. More than 2,000 clean up kits are on the way to the affected areas as well as other emergency supplies.
In addition more emergency disaster service vehicles (canteens) and personnel have been deployed to offer feeding to citizens and emergency personnel in various counties as well as to provide emotional and spiritual care. To date over 4,000 meals have been served.
The Salvation Army is working with state and local officials and stands ready to offer additional aid as needed.
