Salvation Army Responds after Northwood, ND Tornado

NORTHWOOD, ND – August 28, 2007 Two Salvation Army emergency disaster service vehicles (canteens) and personnel have been deployed to Northwood, North Dakota after a F4 tornado ripped through the town killing one person and injuring 18 others. The tornado destroyed a mobile home park and city officials said virtually everything has been damaged.

A Salvation Army mobile kitchen from Grand Forks responded immediately to the local police department's request to provide support for front-line responders. Additionally, a canteen from Fargo was dispatched to serve meals to tornado survivors and emergency workers.

"This is just devastating," said Envoy Mike Fuqua, Salvation Army incident commander. "There is just nothing left in this small town. We are quietly and confidently going about our business to serve these people."

The two canteens are currently on the scene serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and are traveling around town to feed those working in their homes. They are expecting to serve 1,500 meals a day and have served 2,400 meals since Sunday night. With electricity still out across the area The Salvation Army is committed to providing aid for at least another week.
