State Farm Insurance agent Elmer is matching all donations made Dec. 14 – 22 at the web link above and at two Plymouth Cub Foods stores: 3550 Vicksburg Lane and 4445 Nathan Lane.
Schefers can spend $15,000 in matching funds, $10,000 of which has come from his own pocket. The remaining $5,000 was donated by his clients, fellow agents and friends.
Schefers, 66, began helping The Salvation Army four years ago. In late 2003 he discovered that State Farm employees who volunteer more than 40 hours a year receive $500 for their charity.
“I really wanted to take advantage of that money, but didn’t know what to do so late in the year,” said Schefers, a Maple Plain resident and insurance agent of 30-plus years. “Bell ringing seemed like a perfect fit.”
Schefers will log about 53 hours of bell ringing this year. He will ring five- and seven-hour shifts Dec. 14 – 22, bouncing between both Plymouth Cub Foods stores.
“The Salvation Army is encouraging people in the Plymouth area to visit Elmer and support his wonderful efforts,” said Major Paul Fleeman, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people in the Twin Cities and is a safety net for those with no place to turn. We serve 1,100 hot meals every day and house more than 700 people every night. Donations can be made by mailing a check to 2445 Prior Ave, Roseville, MN 55113 or by clicking below.
