PRESS RELEASE
Salvation Army Continues Support as Fire Fighters
Gain Upper Hand on California Fire
LOS ANGELES, CA – September 3, 2009 – The Station Fire is the largest wildfire in the history of Los Angeles County having consumed more than 140,000 acres (218 square miles). To date it has also destroyed 92 houses and other structures worth $14 million and has cost more than $20 million to fight. But favorable weather conditions have helped fire fighters increase containment of the blaze from 5 percent on Monday to more than 22 percent by late Tuesday.
Since Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services has been engaged with the support effort, The Salvation Army has served more than 1,500 meals to those seeking refuge in emergency disaster shelters.
Salvation Army staff and volunteers continue to serve at these shelters as needed supplying not only nourishment for the body, but for the mind and soul as well. Trained Salvation Army officers and staff are offering counseling and spiritual comfort to grateful survivors.
Looking ahead, Salvation Army emergency disaster personnel have already made preliminary contact with other social service agencies for case management for the fire survivors who will shortly be faced with the daunting task of rebuilding their homes and their lives. When the fires go out and the headlines die down, The Salvation Army will continue to provide vital social services for those impacted by the Station Fire.
The Salvation Army serves in more than 100 countries and provides both immediate emergency assistance and long-term recovery help in the event of any disaster. Funds for The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services come from corporate and private donations given specifically for disaster relief.
