Several hundred people attended the event. Scripture readings were given by St. Paul Fire Chief Tim Butler and Maplewood Police Chief David Thomalla. Another reading included the names of the more than 400 Minnesota law enforcement officers and emergency personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty from 1874 – 2009.

The Salvation Army was one of the first relief agencies on the scene of 9/11. The organization has also been first on the scene during recent local tragedies and disasters, including the I-35W bridge collapse, major flooding in the Fargo/Moorhead area and in southeast Minnesota, and several devastating tornadoes.

“The Salvation Army is proud to support the brave men and women who protect our community when disasters strike,” said Major Darryl Leedom, Commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “We are committed to supporting them during disasters large and small.”

The Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people in the Twin Cities and is a safety net for those with no place to turn. It serves 2,100 hot meals a day and houses more than 850 people every night.
