Salvation Army on Standby Following Chemical Spill at Prairie Island
Roseville, Minn. – January 5, 2011 – The Salvation Army is readying staff and volunteers following a non-radiological chemical spill that occurred early this morning at the Prairie Island nuclear plant in Red Wing.
State officials called The Salvation Army at 5:30 a.m. requesting that disaster personnel be placed on standby should cleanup crews need food, water and other services.
The spill was chlorine bleach found leaking from a tank, and poses no threat to the public, Fox 9 News reported.
“We are prepared should our services be needed,” said Major Byron Medlock, Disaster Services Secretary for The Salvation Army Northern Division.
Salvation Army disaster staff and volunteers provide food, water, emotional/spiritual care and other services during times of crisis. Last year, 250 Twin Cities volunteers provided more than 1,200 hours of service at 34 local disasters.
The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 288,000 people a year through its 25 local centers of operation. Daily it serves 2,500 hot meals and shelters 970 people.
