Salvation Army Ready to Provide Samoa Tsunami Relief

October 1, 2009 –The Salvation Army stands ready to receive donations for those affected by the tsunami that struck parts of Samoa and American Samoa on Wednesday morning September 30. The tsunami, which caused death, injuries and widespread destruction, occurred after a powerful earthquake struck the South Pacific.

Territorial Commander Commissioner Don Bell says, ‘Our compassion is strong for the many that have lost their loved ones and homes in the tsunami and whose sense of security is shattered. The Salvation Army wants to reach out to them in tangible ways to bring relief and practical assistance.’

The Salvation Army in New Zealand is readying a team for deployment to provide an appropriate response to the situation on the ground in Samoa.

At the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Salvation Army personnel have been on duty at Auckland International Airport to provide counselling and practical help to those returning from Samoa since Wednesday afternoon.

The Salvation Army serves in more than 100 countries and provides both immediate emergency assistance and long-term recovery help in the event of any disaster. Funds for The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services come from corporate and private donations given specifically for disaster relief.
