PRESS RELEASE

Coats for Kids Distribution on Oct. 28
Thousands of coats given to families across
Twin Cities; not too late to donate

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – October 27, 2010 Capping its 25th annual Coats for Kids program, The Salvation Army will give free coats to thousands of families across the Twin Cites metro area on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 10 metro area locations.

The items will be distributed at Coats for Kids boutiques from 10 a.m.–7 p.m., or while supplies last. The locations include Salvation Army service centers in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Brooklyn Park, Coon Rapids and Maplewood, plus Easter Lutheran Church in Eagan and the Buffalo Community Center in Buffalo. For a detailed list of boutiques, click here or call the United Way at 651-291-0211.

Families in need of a coat are advised to come early. Despite the thousands of coat donations received, it is typical that most locations run out of coats in the early afternoon.

Although coat collection bins were pulled Oct. 17, it is not too late to give. Donations of new or gently used coats are still being accepted at any of the boutique sites. Monetary donations can be made by clicking here; just $15 buys a brand new winter coat.

“We could use more coats,” said Major Darryl Leedom, commander of the Twin Cities Salvation Army. “It seems that this year’s collection was hampered by the unseasonably warm October weather. Now that the cold has arrived, people are finally beginning to dust off their coats. If you have a coat you no longer need, please, help a child by giving it to us.”

Coats for Kids is a joint effort between The Salvation Army and 5 Eyewitness News. Additional sponsors include LOVE 105 FM, Cub Foods, Little Caesars, Kowalski’s Markets, AmeriPride Services, the St. Paul Police Federation and others.

The Twin Cities Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people a year through its 25 local centers of operation. Daily it serves 2,000 hot meals and shelters 850 people. More than 14,000 local volunteers help The Salvation Army provide a multitude of services, from child daycare to senior housing.
