PRESS RELEASE

101-Year-Old Woman Bell Ringing in Litchfield Dec. 22

December 21, 2009 – LITCHFIELD, Minn. – Although Myrtle Engebretson has been alive for more than a century, old age isn’t stopping her from bell ringing for The Salvation Army.

The 101-year-old from Dassel, Minn. is scheduled to bell ring from
1 p.m.–4 p.m. on Dec. 22 at Econofoods in Litchfield, located at 951 East Frontage Road.

Engebretson is almost as old as bell ringing itself. The first Salvation Army kettle appeared in San Francisco, Calif. in the early 1890s.

Engebretson likes to bell ring because of all the wonderful people she meets while standing at the kettle, she said.

“The Lord has been good to me,” said Engebretson, a former school teacher of 50 years. “I want to do something in return. I will bell ring for as long as I’m capable.”
