Salvation Army Hopes for Year-end Contributions to Make Goal

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – December 31, 2008 – The Salvation Army responded to a fire in Brooklyn Park early this morning to provide food and hot beverages to the residents of a town home complex which was evacuated after 4 a.m.  Two local volunteers drove a Salvation Army mobile kitchen to the location and are still providing assistance to both residents, who were evacuated into a waiting metro transit bus, and firefighters and emergency responders.

As the year comes to a close The Salvation Army is still short of its $8.5 million fund-raising goal.  To date The Salvation Army has raised $7.9 million, boosted by a million dollar day on Dec 23 that helped the charity pull out of a $2 million deficit.  Fundraising lagged throughout the Christmas season just as need for assistance soared.  The Salvation Army hopes that donors making year-end contributions will bring it closer to its $8.5 million goal.  Last year the charity had raised $8.2 million by Dec 31.

The Salvation Army serves more than 200,000 people in the Twin Cities and is a safety net for those with no place to turn. We serve 2,100 hot meals every day and house more than 850 people every night. To volunteer with The Salvation Army or to make a credit card donation, call 651-746-3400 or 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
