FEATURED VOLUNTEERS

The Salvation Army would like to recognize the following group for their generous service.

Salvation Army Northern Division Corporate Volunteer of the Year: St. Paul Police Department

Police officers provide tireless, selfless community service. Officers of the St. Paul Police Department have gone a step farther.

They have partnered with the The Salvation Army of St. Paul Eastside, located in a poverty-stricken neighborhood off Payne Ave., to mentor and tutor at-risk children.

The partnership serves two purposes. First, it gives children who are falling behind in their schoolwork the personalized tutoring they need to improve. The police officers all have college backgrounds and enjoy working with the children in this setting.

Second, the partnership allows children to interact with police officers in a positive setting. Many of the kids come from troubled backgrounds and have seen family or friends arrested. This program shows the kids that police officers are not villains.

“The Saint Paul Police Department has been an incredible ally in our efforts to educate underprivileged youth of the eastside neighborhood,” said nominator Captain John Joyner of the St. Paul Eastside Salvation Army.
